Why do you consider Wicca to be a cult? - 02/26/2003

I have always been fascinated by religion. When I try to learn about religions like wicca, buddhisma and islam people are often very rude to me. They treat these religions like they are true evil. Especially wicca. I don't understand how you can compare occultists to wiccans when the is an ENORMOUS difference. Wiccans love nature and only wish to be a part of it. Occultist kill cats and drink their blood to please satan. Both believe that they use magic, wiccans white and occultists black. But in all reality wiccan "white" magic is only the use of herbs and nature to heal people. Aspirin doesn't just come from a lab, it had to be discovered from a plant first. So please don't compare these two religions. It will only make some think Christians are stereotypical and ignorant when it comes to other religions.

Greetings Brooke, and thank you for contacting Contender Ministries. You said that Wiccans are not occultists, because Wiccans merely love nature, and occultists "kill cats and drink their blood to please Satan." In actually, that is not entirely accurate. Satanists kill cats and try to please Satan. Satanists and Wiccans are both classified as occult. Why? Because they both call on a supernatural power that comes from Satan, not from God above. You use terms such as "white magic" and "black magic." I contend that both come from Satan. The difference is that Satanists know they are calling upon Satan, where Wiccan's may not be aware of that. But 2 Corinthians 11:14 states that Satan can masquerade as an "angel of light." One need not call upon the name of Satan in order to be calling upon him.

Do you know what the Bible says about practitioners of magic? Revelation 21:8 says, "But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars--their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death." A little later, Revelations 22:15 says, "Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood."

My American Heritage Dictionary defines "occultism" as "belief in supernatural power." Wiccans may love nature, and that's great. So do I. You suggest they are little more than nature-loving herbalists. That is not accurate. They believe there is a source of supernatural power to be found among the flora and fauna. Romans 1:22-23 says, "Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles."

I've known Wiccans before. They were good and decent people, but they were also deceived. Such deception threatens their eternal souls. I pray for them, as I pray that God will speak to you now.

In Christ,

Ben and Jennifer Rast
