Is Sex Only For Procreation? - 07/18/2008
I was having a discussion and sex came up and I said
that I thought I had read that it was a sin to have sex with your
spouse for any other reason except for procreation.
I was ask[ed] for the verse of the Bible but I could not remember it.
Could you please tell me if I am correct and if so where in the
Bible that verse or verses would be?
Thank you very much for any information.
CONTENDER MINISTRIES RESPONSE:
Hi Sage. Thanks for writing to us. There is no place in the Bible
that states it is a sin to have sex with your spouse for reasons other
than procreation. In fact, if you read the Song of Solomon in the Old
Testament, you'll see quite a bit of passion that has nothing to do
with procreation. God put limits on sex. For the most part, you can
sum up the limits this way - you may only have sex with your spouse.
This encompasses the specific prohibitions on pre-marital sex,
extra-marital sex, homosexuality, etc. However, it is clear from a
full reading of the Bible that sex is a gift from God that spouses are
to enjoy for reasons of love and passion as well as parenthood. In
fact, the Bible instructs us to not withhold sex from our spouses
except under narrow and temporary circumstances (1 Corinthians 7:5). I
hope this helps.
